Lazy Web: South Park Scientology Video

Category: Academic,DRM-sucks — Biella @ 4:49 am

update: success, I got a copy. This means by talk will be that much better. Thank you all!

So I am giving for the upteeenth time (but I am going to retire it!) my talk on Anonymous and Scientology next week and I have decided that I want to show a clip from the South Park episode on the topic – Trapped in the Closet Season 9, Episode 12 (Original Air Date: 11/16/2005).

I made the mistake of buying it on Amazon cuz it is super DRM-FSKCING-ED and I can’t play it on Linux and I don’t know how to crack it. Anyway I also want to cut it to the relevant part, which is the wonderful history of Scientology.

Does anyone have a copy free of DRM? Or point me to where I can find one? This is within the purview of fair use, given that I am a serious academic giving serious attention to this topic :-) . Any help or pointers appreciated!

  1. There is a site http://www.southpark.de/ which is providing access to all of the eopisodesm from the first to the latest. You can watch them in your browser and copy the relevant Flash[a-z0-9]* file from /tmp/ or use DownloadHelper for FireFox.
There should have been an english version but my bandwidth is too thin atm to find it now.

Anyway Have fun with it !

  10. Hi, I hope the above hints had helped you. I have that episode at home and I can share. Btw, I’m reading the “South Park and Philosophy: You Know, I Learned Something Today”. The episode about Scientology is mentioned in this book and could also be useful for your talk :)

  11. What are you going to talk about Scientology for? Although I am considered by many to be a radical fundamental baptist, I have yet to find any reason to attack the Scientology people (other than to save them from going to hell). I have tried to understand them several times, but I have found so many different contradicting opinions of them that I have pretty much given up. But like I said, I don’t see them as a threat to anything, so why are you talking about them?

  12. Just install libdvdcss2 from Debian Multimedia (as above). This will play all DVDs without issues about region coding, flashing DVD drive firmware, etc. It skips authenticating to the DVD drive for the encryption keys; it has some player keys, and failing that can easily brute force the key.

However, don’t but DVDs, they have DRM on them.

i am not interested in Scientology per se. i have a line of work that examines Internet battles against scientology, past and present, against the church. i remain mostly agnostic when it comes to church policies and am interested in these protests movements, how they emerged and what they might reveal more generally about the nature of political action.
