Funny but true. I am still getting a trickle of comments on my rant against Blue Cross NO Shield as they, like most American insurance companies, s.u.c.k.

  1. “Funny but true.” you say, as you point to a Onion piece.
You may find similarities to you own situation, but as humor goes, I find phrases like these:
“Wife watches as Haige tearfully asks God for bank loan to be approved.”
    demeaning and indecent.

  2. Why demeaning?

    This is demeaning:

“THURSDAY, June 4 (HealthDay News) — In 2007, medical problems and expenses contributed to nearly two-thirds of all bankruptcies in the United States, a jump of nearly 50 percent from 2001, new research has found.”

Getting sick is a tragedy, not living in a society, a wealthy one, that does not support healthcare, that is demeaning.

  3. “Why demeaning?”

Because the linked article reduces the man and his situation to a caricature, something for us, the readers, to laugh at, rage at.

“Getting sick is a tragedy, not living in a society, a wealthy one, that does not support healthcare, that is demeaning.”

Are you under the impression that I do not agree here?
It feels very much like you’re setting up an association fallacy.

  4. It is the Onion, or is that not clear?

  5. “It is the Onion, or is that not clear?”

In my first post I referred to it as “Onion piece”, so Yes.

This said, it is clear I fail to explain myself properly, so this post will be my last.
Let me end in style, namely by G*dwinning this thread:

If you want to draw attention to a cause using dark humor, do it with taste. In that respect “The Onion” is not quite at the same level as Benignis “La vita è bella”.

  6. Shrug, I guess we have different tastes. I find dark humor and sardonic critique (ala Swift) particularly powerful. Not that everyone should but The Onion has laid bare a lot of stuff that people are willing to entertain because sugar coated.
