The Anthropology of Hackers

Category: Academic,Hackers — Biella @ 12:45 pm

I meant to blog about this a long time ago but it slipped past me. Here is my course on hackers described in The Atlantic . I ma not teaching it this year but will do so next year. I actually include a lot more than what is in the syllabus (much to the chagrin of my students).

  2. Though I read your Atlantic description for its ethnographic and bibliographical content, couldn’t help but notice something interesting about your pedagogy. Are you able to adapt the course’ material in realtime? Are students’ comments made in passing or are you actually discussing their enjoyment of the texts?
Makes me think of something I might post on my LearningTwo.org blog..

  3. Hi Gabriella.
I’m an Anthropology student from NUIM (National University of Ireland, Maynooth) and I’m planning on doing my BA thesis on hackers/software pirates (particularly the ones that put themselves in harm’s way and/or put in extra work in order to help comparatively non-computer-literate ‘outsiders’ pirate successfully).

Problem is, it’s kind of breaking new ground as far as anthropologists are concerned. So far, you’re the only one I’ve come across whose published anything related to the subject.

So, I was just wondering if you had any tips or advice about researching hackers. Or even some leads/contacts. I filled in my email.
    Thanks!
